It seemed like a year of drastic hairstyle changes in 2020 with several people either cutting their hair shorter or dyeing it in bold colours. In 2021 too, being bold with a new hair look is the new normal. It’s not only the mullet haircut being all the rage but women are challenging unrelenting beauty norms and wearing their hair short with pride.
There’s never just one reason why women cut their hair. Gabrielle Union put it well in an Instagram post of her ‘summer chop’ saying: “The movies always show women cutting their hair when all is lost, but I wanted to know the feeling of making a change when things are gravy.”

There is a long list of celebrities who’ve sported iconic buzz cuts in the 90s and decades preceding that, this includes the likes of Grace Jones, Erykah Badu and Demi Moore. More recently, a new generation of celebrity women are donning this hairstyle as and when they please.

The buzz cut is one of Michaela Coel’s signature looks. At the Emmy Awards recently, the talented multi-hyphenate sported a hard part on her short hairstyle.
Nomzamo seems to dazzle in whatever hairstyle she tries. The short natural haircut she debuted in 2020, with laid edges and an occasional diagonal hard part, is one to remember.

In the 90s Jada rocked a wavy blonde buzz cut, a style that also defined the era. In 2021, the actress brought back a version of the short hair but took it further to a complete shave.

Just like her mother, Willow has alternated between long hairstyles and shorter ones. Seamlessly alternating between locs, an afro, and mohawks and a shaved head – willow is a hair chameleon of note.
Keke Palmer embraces colour when it comes to her hair. With her buzz cuts, it’s no surprise that blues and purples are part of her hair colour repertoire.
