Anyone else obsessed with Meredith Duxbury’s videos online? The NYC-based make-up artist and beauty influencer just reached 12 million followers on TikTok and has almost a million on Instagram, @meredithduxbury. But while the amount of product she slaps on is mesmerising and, let’s face it, it’s the main reason I watch, did you know that most of us — including Meredith – probably have no clue about the amount of product we should be using?
Here’s a good rule of thumb: if you’re forking out for the pricey stuff, you probably only need to use a tiny amount. Buying less, but better, is a smart move, as is looking at the strength of the ingredients packed into each bottle or tube. It’s all about microdosing these days, especially when it comes to things like retinol and vitamin C where too much product can have adverse effects.
There are also some products we think we should be lashing on just because they’re a bit more affordable — like cleanser. It’s common to think that more of it means a cleaner face, when all we might need to do is use smaller doses multiple times, instead of all at once.
In a world of excess and so much waste, maybe it’s time for our beauty routines to be refined and downsized so they’re not part of the problem.
French tips are back with a bang, but in bold colour combos like red and blue as opposed to the classic pink and white. The big trend on TikTok is to put some polish on a silicone make-up sponge and then push the top of your nail into it to get the perfect tip! #tryit
Atomic blonde
It was only a matter of time before Olaplex would need to add to its numbered haircare line. With No.5 already released, say hello to No.4P Blonde Enhancer Toning Shampoo, €27.50 for 250ml, from salons and e-tailers such as beautybag.ie. It works to keep your colour as good as new, claiming to brighten the hair three times better than other purple shampoos.

Suitable for all hair types and textures, it’s a good one for all blondes, natural or not, and for grey hair — something many of us have embraced since the pandemic. For those not going to the salon as much, No.4P is ideal for the in-between stages to neutralise and tone down any unwanted warmth. Just like all Olaplex products, this new addition contains the brand’s patented technology, which contributes to strong bonds and healthy hair.
Easy on the eye
We need to talk about all the red carpet moments we’ve been served of late. We had Kim K absolutely killing it at the Met Gala — the memes are still going strong; then, at the VMAs, Lil Nas X looked absolutely resplendent in a lilac custom Versace suit-gown hybrid that gave me Prince feels, and let’s not forget Cynthia Erivo wowing us with her neon Valentino gown at the Golden Globes.
As a beauty writer, a favourite pastime of mine is looking at footage of celebs getting ready before shows. Now that events are back, one thing I’ve noticed is the rise of eye masks, especially while peeps are getting make-up done. Are they the secret to looking refreshed and gorgeous on the red carpet? I’ve rounded up a few of my faves, so we can all get in on that action.

Advanced Génifique Yeux Light Pearl Hydrogel Melting 360 Eye Mask, above, €13.50, is Lancôme’s contribution to fighting tired under-eyes, as seen on Zendaya. This mask contains the same amount of bifidus extract found in HALF a bottle of Advanced Génifique Yeux Light Pearl — it works quickly to reduce fine lines and aims to leave the eye contour looking brighter.
The 111SKIN Celestial Black Diamond Eye Mask, below, from €12 for a single pack, at Brown Thomas and Adare Manor, was Jessica Chastain’s secret weapon before the Venice Film Festival. This potent mask has been formulated to combat fine lines, wrinkles, and dehydration around the eye area.  It contains a small amount of retinol that works to retexture the skin gently, while the vitamins improve discolouration.

There’s also a potent peptide complex in there to combat lines. All you need to do is leave the mask on for 20 minutes, or until it is completely dry, and you’ll be left with a plumped, hydrated, brighter eye area. No wonder Oscar Isaac was so visibly adoring of his stunning flame-haired co-star!
