Kareena On Returning to LFW & How The Pandemic Changed Her Idea Of Fashion | – Femina

The FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week closed with Gaurav Gupta’s extravagant show on the kind of note that perfectly sums up our feelings about returning to the fashion week in person after 18 long months. And if there were one thing to top that feeling, it was the pleasure of watching Kareena Kapoor Khan walk the ramp for the designer wearing his science-defying creation.
The dress, a bodycon cocktail number in beige featuring exquisite embroidery, green bugle beads, sequins, and modern zardosi pipes, was actually a sustainable wonder made from fabric derived from recycling landfill and ocean plastic waste. Bebo sported a bold lip, with hair tied back in a chignon and no accessories, and gave fashion savants something to talk about for days to come.
We caught up with the actor to quiz her about returning to the ramp after a hiatus and her relationship with fashion, especially post the pandemic. Excerpts:
How did it feel to do a physical show after 18 months?
It felt really good. The entire team has taken such amazing care in following the protocols so I do feel very safe even though we are still in Covid times. I do have two children at home, so I was a little paranoid. But this was also exciting because I hadn’t taken to the ramp in so long. It was such an important concept for the evening, which is sustainability, and I couldn’t resist myself.
What do you think of Gaurav’s collection?
It is great! He is anyway known for his over-the-top, elaborate, cocktail kind of garments and outfits, and they involved a lot of recycled fabrics, which I think is quite cool. His garments are so well cut for the body and they have such nice shape.
You have been the showstopper for the Lakme Fashion Week for close to a decade. How does it feel to be a fashion week MVP?
I think it has become synonymous now. Bebo and Lakme are a given. We have had a wonderful association, it has almost been a decade of reinventing each other in terms of makeup and coming up with new collections, like this time it is all about the bold lip and colours like fuschia and statement red – which are anyway shades that are associated with me. So the brand and the brand ambassador have grown from strength to strength. We’ve been loyal to each other.
What is your idea of fashion? What would you say is your off-screen style?
My personal style is my pajamas. Sometimes I just roll out of the house wearing them and people are, “No! You can’t wear these!” (laughs) My personal style is all about comfortable and casual. My wardrobe is full of denim, black dresses and things that I can wear and keep.
Has the pandemic changed your perspective on fashion?
As a matter of fact, it has. I’ve become so much more aware. I’ve become more conscious of wearing more Indian designers, supporting our Indian artisans. You know, there’s a lot of things that the pandemic has highlighted that people are talking about and addressing, sustainability being one of them. We have to wear things that will support our Indian designers and karigars and give them that kind of exposure.
