Live Music This Weekend: Winds of time blow in their gray hair as Graywind follows the dream –

Breaking into a local music scene is never easy, but Hendo’s downtown Dugout Sports Bar is doing its part to keep fresh musical blood pumping through the ears of patrons who always want more, different and better.
“Mike Griffin, Dugout owner, has taken his extremely valuable time and great reputation to promote and offer us the opportunity to bring fresh and different live music to his extremely musically intellectual crowds,” said Blu Ramakis, the drummer for Graywind Band. “Mike and I hold each other in very high esteem on many levels.”
Graywind, a band of four seasoned musicians based out of Brevard, will play at the Dugout this Saturday night, bringing their collective talents and years of experience to discriminating patrons.
In the two years since Graywind was formed by bass player Mike Grant and keyboard player George Limbo, it has played in Hendersonville about once a month, almost exclusively at the Dugout.
“Although not being part of the area’s ‘old guard’ or ‘local well-knowns,’ it becomes extremely difficult to break onto the music scene,” Ramakis explained. “We are not your typical ‘every band, same song lineup’ group. We are a completely ‘fan based song selection’ group. We guarantee you will never see the same show twice: each show has new material.
“We are different because we are not the same-old-same-old like 99.9 percent of the others. We strive to be different yet completely recognizable.”
If you find yourself at the Dugout this Saturday night, you can expect to see four men of a certain age playing blues and rock covers from the likes of the Allman Brothers, Jonny Lang, Blackberry Smoke and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Band members are:
Limbo, a founding member of the rock group Diablo of the late 1970s. In the ‘80s, he formed the four-piece band Fallen Angel. Today, he believes, “There are two kinds of music: good music and bad music. This collaboration — Graywind Band — will be all good music.”
Lead and rhythm guitarist Steve Whiteside, a local who calls East Flat Rock home. He has been a part of the local scene since he was a teenager, and has gained lots of mileage performing with notable locals such as Johnnie Blackwell, Carrie Morrison, Eric Congdon, Barney Barnwell’s Plum Hollow Band, and Caribbean Cowboys.
“Graywind is gonna rock!” he said.
Bass and rhythm guitarist Grant, who traces his guitar-playing roots to watching The Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He soon switched to the bass guitar. For years he gigged with a long list of both the famous and the wannabes, including The Hungry I, Johnny Mackey & The Knives, Bazooka Joe & The All-Stars, Eclipse, Laser, Madcap, Winner, Diablo and Flashback. In 1984, he moved to Chicago to be a session bassist with various acts and studios.
His day job with the U.S. Postal Service led to the creation of the band Special Delivery. In 2015, he returned to WNC, where he and Limbo have gigged ever since. “Now I love playing blues and classic rock ‘n’ roll,” he said. “You always return to your roots.”
Ramakis’s musical career started when he was 7, learning Latin percussion from Christoble Santiago. Soon he tapped into New Orleans jazz and blues with influences coming from Fats Domino, Louis Armstrong and Sugar Boy Crawford. He began working professionally at 13.
After a 10-year break to serve his country, Blu revived his musical passions on the West Coast. Several years later, Blu got hooked on the New Country and returned South to share the limelight with A-listers such as Alan Jackson, Pam Tillis, Tanya Tucker, and Kenny Chesney. Having fulfilled his lifelong dreams to be touring and studio musician, he joined Graywind Band in 2021.
With the band members’ gray hair and long lists of accomplishments, you might think the band’s name is in reference to their ages.
Think again: “Actually, it comes from the series Game of Thrones, the wolf in the series. Greywolf, however, a female Irish rock band, holds rights to the spelling Greywind so ours became Graywind with an ‘a,’ Ramakis said with a laugh.
“That being said, there is a vast amount of musical experience within the group. We keep following the dream.”
